hello everybody and welcome to my punta cana - q & a. maybe you have a few questions to which i can give some answers here. which hotel were you staying in? i was in the 4 star hotel vista sol in punta cana. how was the room? the hotel was a 4 star hotel and the rooms were ok. however, our bathroom was a disaster. see vid! i recommend here to change the room if possible because the bathroom was really bad, i'd say. it was run down, dilapidated, small animals crawling thereabouts.
and we just did not change it for the reason, because we are too lazy and cozy. did you get new towels in the hotel? yes, you get new towels every day with the room service. i think that was either two or three towels per person. also you got there a special card. it was kind of a towel card. (for the beach towel). you handed that in at a special place and you got a beach-towel for it. then you could always change the towel and take it back to your room, and then again the next day you got a new one.
and at the end of your stay you had to give the towel back and then you got back the card again. if you have not had the card at the end, because you have taken the towel with you, you had to pay a fee. i mean it was 10 euros. was there seaweed on the beach? i have to say there was a lot of seaweed on the beach. they also have piled during night – they really piled like waves on the beach, some as large as this - in such big hills. stupidly, this seaweed was not put away until about 10 a.m. when the stuff started to work.
there was also a lot of seaweed in the sea. so you swam and you really had seaweed in your hands. (on saona island there was no seaweed!) i think it was because we were there during the rainy season. i do not know how it is there in the dry season. probably better when it comes to seaweed. how was the sand on the beach? well, in our hotel-area there were not only palm trees, but also something like fir trees or fir plants … what so ever… and they've dropped a lot of pine branches and pine cones. in other words: all over the ground the sand was mixed with this fir plants. firstly, it looked dirty and secondly, if you traipsed over it without flipflops you really hurt yourself. it was uncomfortable to traipse over it.
one always imagines, when one lands in the caribbean that the sand is super white like powder sugar. that was not the case at our resort. but we went on a walk along the beach to the right side for about one kilometer and there were actually resorts where the sand was white and completely free of this fir plat-pieces. see image. that was somewhere in this area. how was the room service? we had room service every day. each day new, fresh towels were brought, but only at about 5 p.m. how much was the transfer? when you arrive at the airport, there are of course numerous taxi drivers who try to offer you a transfer. they all have a list of the hotels, and they know exactly
how much you have to pay if you want to go to a special hotel. in other words: we said our hotel is vista sol and they showed us the hotel list and that a ride to vista sol costs 35 dollars or 35 euros. they make no difference between the dollar and euro, because the exchange rate is about the same. in other words, you could pay 35 euros or dollars. per trip! not per person, but per trip. how to pay there? it is highly recommended to take dollar notes, many one-dollar notes with you. of course you can also pay with euros, but coins are not so popular since they can’t use the coins. they can’t exchange coins in the bank. they can only exchange notes in the bank.
and of course, you pay tips for everything over there. as it is, it’s way cheaper for you to pay the stuff with one, two dollar notes then to pay with a 5-dollar note. i heard that some people do pay with 1 euro coins. but the stuff can’t really use them. so they need to find someone, maybe a tourist who then exchanges the coins into a 5-euro note. anyway. as i said they don’t differentiate between euros and dollars, that means, if anything will cost $ 5, you can also pay with euros. however, if you withdraw cash at a cashpoint, you get pesos.
and you tip every service. that is, if one drags your suitcase somewhere, you tip. there are many photographers who run around with monkeys, with iguanas, parrots and charge either 10 euros per photo or you say you are not interested, then most of the time they’ll put the animals on your neck or your head anyway and say, "just give me a tip". then you can give them one, two dollars and then you’re good. do you bargain there? of course, you bargain there! there are a lot of stalls there. also at the resort. (however, on at the resort it’s just once a week.) there’s a lot of jewellery. and they tend to say:
85 dollars… for a necklace. and then you just say: but i only have 5 euros! so they say: good! 5 euro is also okay. is there something important to know about the hotel? the hotel consisted of three major subsystems, e ach with a large pool. and many ducks and peacocks are running around over there. there was also a lot of naughty birds that liked to join to your table and snap things of your plate ... (even the peacock himself!). a regular cat we had there as well. it showed up every time we were about to eat.
and it begged a bit ... and was very successful with it. then there are stray dogs on the beach who like to lie down under your beach chair, whilst you're sunbathing, since it’s shady there. so you just feel something moving up and down… and you think: what's that? then you look beneath it and there is the dog the shade. where did you get your food? there was a huge restaurant which was opened almost around the clock. there you could have breakfast, lunch and dinner. it was all in buffet-style. in addition, there was a french restaurant, an italian and a mexican one.
there, however, you had to book early in the morning, so you could eat there in the evening. there, you could only eat for dinner. and here, it was not buffet style, but you had to order something from the menu and it was brought to you to the table. partly you need to get used to the food, but then it was delicious again. there was a huge variety of food, so you could always find something suitable for you. that was no problem at all. however, we made sure that we ate only thoroughly cooked food, and no fresh salads that were rinsed briefly with this water, to simply avoid gastrointestinal disasters. important tip! in addition, there was also a so-called sports bar which was right on the beach ...
but it was just called sports bar because there was ice cream, pizza, beer, sweet drinks and all kinds of hamburgers and fries - and just super greasy stuff, but so delicious! furthermore, of course, there was a cocktail bar on every corner, where you could drink cocktails for free. very important: drinking water from the tap, is not a good idea if you do not want to spend the rest of your trip on the porcelain bowl (= toilet). you get there two bottles of water and as soon as they’re empty they are replaced with new ones. only these bottles you can use to brush your teeth and also for drinking. everything else is off limits!
what kind of activities can you do there? you can book additional trips and events. you can, for example, book “swimming with dolphins†for a few hours or you could book a place on a party boat and be driven around on the water with loud music, having a party on the boat. you can go to other islands, for example, to saona island. we went there! see the vid! the most amazing island at all! that was pure caribbean feeling! then you can paraglide. that means, you sat in a parachute that was pulled by a boat so that you were floating through the air.
or you sat in something like a small plane that looked like half a bicycle, with a small propeller at the back. and you could fly with that by yourself through the air. you could book such activities. or you could snorkel. however, every journey and every extra event costs you about 80-150 euros per person. if you can effort it, you should definitely book it. you need to know that there are two different ways to book: either directly through the hotel, which was more expensive. or you take the offer from the people who were selling their activities on the beach. in other words, you should take the time and listen to those beach vendors,
because they actually offer the same trips and the same events, whether it is swimming with dolphins, snorkelling ... they offer the same things as the hotel. but, they offer it a lot cheaper! for example, we paid $ 95 per person for the trip to saona island, because we booked through the hotel. but the vendors on the beach would have had sold us the same trip for about 50 or 60 euros per person. the same trip, the same route, even the same ships, with which we were driven around there. it was just a different provider. so, you should definitely listen to those offers from the vendors on the beach.
have you been harassed? hmmm ... i must say that the beach sellers, who always wanted to sell you a hat, or a coconut, or a pair of sunglasses, or a massage, or whatever ... and this also includes those vendors who were running around there with their trips, with their offers ... they were very pushy. however, there were private security men at the resort. first, i wondered what they are meant for. ... those were the men with these sticks ... and i thought, maybe that's a dangerous place, or something like that. but they were actually there to scare the vendors a bit away. in other words, they had their whistle
and when too many vendors approached the tourists, they whistled briefly, really only very briefly, so that it wasn’t harassing at all and they told them: go! move on! therefore, they didn’t approach the tourists too much, but just asked from afar: do you want a massage? and then you just answered briefly: no. and then it was ok. right? this way they did not come to you, knocked at your back and asked: “do you want to buy something?†they just asked once from afar, then you answered briefly and that’s all. however, i have to say that if you go for a walk on the beach… you have no chance!
they follow you like flies! of course you have to understand that it’s how they finance their lives. however, they are incredibly pushy. you can’t walk on the beach without eine crowd of men following you, forcing you to...., sometimes even grabbing your hand and saying: "here is my shop! here's my shop! come and take a look at what i have to offer.†the point is, the beach is lined with such shops. they are garage-like. mostly dark without light, because it's actually bright outside. but the shops are dark. they are usually clogged with pictures that are really nice and that you can buy there.
then there are the typical tourist things like beach clothes, beach towels, hats, creams, sunglasses, alcohol ... it’s always the same. and you literally can only move like this in there, but in the middle of these shops, in these stores were beds! that was just very, very odd, because could barely move, you were just able to take a brief look and you already knew… ah, it is the same as in the shop next door, and next door and that one next door ... and then there are those beds and you think : for god’s sake! what are those beds doing here? well, it’s because they are offering those massages. mostly these beds had quite disgusting sheets and then you just think: well! i really don’t want to have a massage on this bed. and it's very hard to shake them off. it’s nearly impossible. and of course they are disappointed if you say: sorry, i have no interest in buying anything!
you're there in your hat, your sunglasses ... and they say: “buy a hat! buy a hat! purchase a pair of sunglasses!†and you say: “but i have those things already! i don’t need to buy another pair.†they don’t understand that easily. until, on one of the very last days, we finally said: no money! no shopping! then they looked at you: no money? something like: how is that possible! you're a tourist! you must have money for shopping! you then simply said: no money! no shopping! and so they left you alone. but they’ve been very pushy. as i said, they partially grabbed your hand and tried ...well, not to drag ... but just asked very insistently: come with me! come with me! although you just wanted to take a walk on the beach.
that was partly really not possible. and that was a pity. was there internet for free? yes, there was a place in the hotel where there was internet for free, namely the theatre. you could use it best early in the morning, as long as not too many people were logged in, because the more people were logged in, the slower was the internet. then of course there's also the possibility to buy your own internet access. it costs 10 euros per day and you could use it in the whole resort, even at your room and on the beach. and it was very fast. you paid either 10 euros per day or 40 euros or dollars for the whole week. in addition, there was also a computer room with two computers
and for 5 dollars you could use the internet for half an hour there. was there a safe? yes, there was a safe in the room, but you had to pay for it, and this was 10 euros or dollars for the whole stay. when did you have to check out? you had to check out by 12 clock. however, you could also check out by 4 or 5 p.m., but you had to pay 40 euros or dollars extra for that. was there animation? yes, there was a whole team that made the animation, starting early in the morning from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. i think. there were all kind of programs and games
like dancing on the beach, yoga on the beach, games like ... something like boules and other 4-a-row - games ... whatever ... and the winners got two small bottles of rum each time ... i think, it was rum . yes. here. something like that. two of them. don ron. in addition, there was an event every night in the theatre, organised by the animation team or an extra booked event. for example, there was a circus event. then we had a michael jackson - event. both absolutely terrific. and then we had singers and whatever.
so every day there was something new, something different. and after the event you could go to the disco, where the animation team animated everyone to dance with them ... they even danced themselves and the were… well, the people know how to dance!!! that was amazing! really great! how was the weather and was the hotel crowded? how was the hotel and was it crowded? we're been there during the off-season and actually during the rainy season, from about 25th may to 5th june. since it was the off-season, the hotel was relatively deserted. we never had trouble finding a table, we had never problems to book a table,
we never had a problem finding a beach chair we went to the beach in the morning and.... watch the vids! it was completely deserted. and later on ... at noon, in the afternoon it was a bit more crowded, but free beach chairs en masse. so you could really choose your place in the shade or sun. no problem! the weather was always hot. from time to time it was cloudy, then again it was very clear. from time to time a bit cloudy and when it was cloudy, it was still very, very warm. so we were constantly on the beach, although the clouds were there. and on two evenings, at about 8 p.m., it actually rained for about 20 to 30 minutes.
but then it was pouring like buckets. i've never seen something like that before. and then it was over again. i need to mention that the sun goes down at about 6:30 p.m. over there. it was really pitch-dark at about 6:30 p.m. that's why we were always so early on the beach since the sun was gone at 6:30 p.m. what kind of problems are there? what bothered me a bit is the fact that you can ... if you go to the restrooms at the resort, there were those signs right above the toilets asking you not to throw the toilet paper into the toilet, but in the container that was right next to it. as it turned out, the toilets and their pipes are very susceptible to blocking.
so the guests were asked not to throw the used toilet paper in the toilet, but in the container next to it! in other words, you were on the beach and wanted to go to the toilet for a moment, you went in there and were blown away by an odour of shit, since there was this toilet paper that was full of shit piled in the container next to the toilet and not flushed down the toilet. that was a crazy thing... not all of the toilets were like this, by the way. but quite a few of them. the next problem is: the hotel doesn’t provide any adapters. that means you have to bring your own adapter with you or buy one there at the resort. there are very simple adapters though. we bought one for $ 1.
next problem: there was only one wall socket in the hotel room! and that one nearly fell out of the wall. do i have any recommendations for you, if you’d want to go to the caribbean someday? yes! so, if you really want to have this caribbean feeling, ie: sand like powdered sugar and white, the sea turquoise blue or turquoise green ... or whatever ... you absolutely need to go towards saona island! over there it’s really just like you'd imagine the caribbean to be like. i don’t think you can actually book a hotel room right on saona island because it’s actually a nature reserve, however, in the dominican rep., there’s an area called bayahibe or something like that.
and, according to information from the locals, this is the most beautiful area in the south-eastern dominican republic. there you'll find the white powdery sand, the wonderful palm trees, the turquoise sea and it is very close to saona island. you just need to get there by a boat. so, you can book a room there and then drive to saona island every day. otherwise, if that is too expensive, i recommend hotels a little further to the right, a mile to the right or something like that. somewhere where there is no longer that pine scrub. this already makes a huge difference. above all this, i have to say that our hotel was perfectly fine. we were happy with it. great people, great entertainment program. i have to say, we are just that much demanding,
so we didn’t complain about the bathroom. but you can do so. there are certainly better rooms than ours. but the resort itself was really top. it was super, super nice! highly recommended, especially because of all the animals that roam there. and there was also a program for children. and everything was all really the way it should be. the only deficit is actually this pine scrub. that was the only thing. . of course, you can’t beam the vendors away. they are everywhere along the beach, no matter which hotel you choose. and i have talked to people/tourists over there who said that they visit the caribbean every year. they’ve already tried out over 10 different hotels, and they considered our hotel – the hotel vista sol – as one of the best there. so everyone was really very, very happy and ... it’s highly recommended ... so ...
just watch the vids. maybe you like it. think about it. if you are not so very demanding, take a look at it (the hotel). that's it then. that were my q & a's. i hope i could help someone out there, in case you’re planning to visit the dominican republic. yes ... well, i recommend to watch the vids again,… and ... see you next time. bye.
